Bulgaria is a walkers' paradise. Thousands of kilometres of waymarked trails join a network of well maintained mountain huts, offering access to remote and beautiful alpine terrain. The meadows, forests, ridges and cirques of ranges like the Rodopi and Vitosha mountains are home to some of Europe's rarest plants and animals, and were the hideouts of the patriots, poets and revolutionaries who fought for the nation state that is modern Bulgaria. Now that the communist inspired hiking movements have come to an end Bulgaria offers the walker an unspoilt solitude not to be found in other European ranges. With cheap flights to Bulgaria leaving from most European cities, it is easy to plan a beautiful walking trip here. Depending on how much time you have, you can organize anything from a long weekend to en entire month. There are so many gorgeous places to see and experience, any amount of time spent here will fly by. Routes are spanning seven mountain ranges, from the 30-day crossing of the country via Stara Plania to the compact delights of the Vitosha traverse, which can walked in a long weekend from Sofia. | ![]() | |||||
